COVID-19 reinfection unlikely for at least 6 months, study finds

The MMR vaccine could be partly to thank for children's low rate of COVID-19 infections and better prospects for survival.

Study co-author, Dr Christoph Neumann-Haefelin, Head of the Gerok Liver Center at University Hospital Freiburg, also expressed optimism about their results, suggesting that immunity against the new coronavirus can be achieved after an infection, and that, "similarly, vaccines now being tested in trials could provide significant protection against SARS-CoV-2".

Antibodies were undetectable after 50 days in individuals who "develop modest neutralizing antibody titres after infection", while those patients who had more severe symptoms could continue to produce antibodies up to 60 days after infection, that study found.

Conducted in collaboration with Oxford University Hospitals, this large-scale research on immunity to Covid-19 has not yet been independently reviewed.

Researchers from the University of Central Florida used 3D modeling and computer simulations to experiment how far sneeze droplets travel in people with different physiological features, such as nasal flow and teeth structure.

The team focused on four components of the immune system: antibodies, B cells that make more antibodies, as well as two T cells that kill other infected cells. "Smoking reduces the natural defences and this allows the virus to enter and take over the cells".

If the adaptive immune response is powerful enough, it could leave a lasting memory of the infection that will give protection in the future.

One person dies from COVID-19 every 17 seconds in Europe
The World Health Organization's top official in Europe says face masks can prevent COVID-19-related lockdowns . It had the most new cases of any continent at 46% of the worldwide total.

Scientists said the results indicated most people are unlikely to get COVID-19 again if they have already had it in the previous six months.

The current study involved 560 healthy volunteers, including 240 age 70 or over.

In this study, the team of researchers at the La Jolla Institute of Immunology in California, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NY, investigated multiple compartments of circulating immune memory to SARS-CoV-2 in 185 Covid-19 cases, including 41 cases more than six months post-infection. Other side effects may include fever and rash.

"Frailty is increasingly understood to affect older adults' responses to vaccines", the editorialists write.

It found in June about a quarter of the key workers studied had high levels of T-cells which recognised the Covid virus in their blood - but only just over half of them appeared to have had Covid-19. By integrating multiple imaging techniques, they saw the virus create "virus-copying factories" in cells that look like clusters of balloons.

"We have solved a major piece of the cytokine storm mystery by characterizing critical factors responsible for initiating this process, and thereby identifying a unique combination therapy using existing drugs that can be applied in the clinic to save lives", Kanneganti said in the news release. "We now have a much better idea how SARS-CoV-2 changes the intracellular architecture of the infected cell and this will help us to understand why the cells are dying so quickly".
