Sia Fires Back at Critics Over Autism Representation in Music

Sia shares 'Hey Boy' from 'Music' soundtrack

"FURY", she wrote on Twitter on Friday (November 20).

"The news you've been waiting for!"

This week saw the release of the first trailer for Music, which stars Ziegler as the title character, a non-verbal teenager who finds herself in the care of her sister, played by Kate Hudson. (One Night in Miami..., Hamilton) together with breakout star Maddie Ziegler (upcoming West Side Story), and is a wholly original exploration of the healing power of love and the importance of community. "It's incredibly offensive as is the infantalisation of the character". People with disabilities are not broken and don't need fixing.

She also noted that it would be "cruel, not kind" to cast an autistic actor who was similar to Music because "She found it extremely stressful and overwhelming", which suggests that Sia wasn't willing to accommodate her set for an autistic actor's comfort.

When a disabled actor spoke out and shared that she would have been happy to step in at short notice and be involved with the film, Sia simply replied: "Maybe you're just a bad actor".

For the film, Sia worked with the organization Autism Speaks, which has been criticized for its alleged polarizing and exploitative viewpoints, causing some fans to question the film before it was even released. "I spent three f**king years researching, I think that's why I'm so f**king bummed".

The film follows the story of Zu, a newly sober drug dealer who unexpectedly becomes the new guardian of her teenage half-sister named Music, who is on the autism spectrum.

Sia was antagonistic when responding to criticism from people within the disabled community.

Campus returns to modified Phase One as Vermont Covid-19 cases surge
This latest case count, which is based on active cases, marks the most cases ever recorded on campus at any one point. All in-person social activities and events, including athletic practices, are canceled or need to be moved online.

She went on to say that she hired "plenty of special abilities kids" to work on the movie and even "tried working with" a girl on the spectrum before casting Ziegler. She said she did try "working with a handsome young girl non-verbal on the spectrum and she found it unpleasant and stressful".

"I've never referred to music as disabled", Sia explained to one critic who asked why she didn't cast an autistic actor to play Music.

Others, such as Twitter user @oceansofnovels, condemned the singer's use of the organization Autism Speaks to consult on the project.

AAPD didn't immediately respond to Yahoo Life's request for comment.

Social media users are criticising Sia for hiring a neurotypical person to instead of someone with autism to play the leading role.

Music is written, directed and produced by Sia.

Still, Sia continues to express her upset as the autism community speaks out. F- f- why don't you watch my film before you judge it?
