Pompeo starts unprecedented tour of West Bank settlement, Golan

Palestinians outraged as Pompeo visits illegal Israeli settlement

Turkey on Thursday slammed a visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank, Anadolu Agency reports.

Pompeo has so far backed Trump in refusing to concede defeat to President-elect Joe Biden and it remains unclear how the Biden administration will manage the current USA relationship with Israel or if he will work to reverse some of its policies. Pompeo announced that the United States would now consider exports from much of the West Bank as "Made in Israel".

"We want to stand with all other nations that recognise the BDS movement for the cancer that it is".

But with Pompeo's newly announced rules, which he said were "consistent with our reality-based foreign policy approach", all producers within areas where Israel exercises authority - most notably Area C under the Oslo Accords - will be required to mark goods as "Israel, ' 'Product of Israel, ' or 'Made in Israel" when exporting to the United States.

Both the PA and Israel have agreed on Tuesday to resume relations, severed on May 19 by the Palestinians following insistence by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to annex a large part of the occupied West Bank. "This is an outgoing administration, but it set a symbolic precedent", she said.

Pompeo - who has so far backed Trump in refusing to concede defeat to President-elect Joe Biden - is on what could be his final Europe and Middle East tour in the post.

Pompeo made this announcement during a visit to the Israeli settlement of Psagot in the West Bank, reportedly "marking the first time a sitting Secretary of State has travelled to an Israeli settlement".

Pompeo had no scheduled meetings with Palestinian leaders, who have strongly rejected Trump's stance on the decades-old conflict, including Washington's recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

Pompeo's official statement, published on the US Department of State's website, says: "It is the policy of the United States to combat anti-Semitism everywhere in the world and in whatever form it appears, including all forms of discrimination and hatred rooted in anti-Semitism".

On the way there, Mr Pompeo stopped at Qasr el-Yahud, revered as the site of the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan Valley. The two governments have shared close ties throughout the years.

Mr Pompeo said a year ago that the U.S. no longer considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank to be contrary to global law.

"Pompeo is intoxicated by apartheid wine stolen from Palestinian land".

The decision on labelling "blatantly violates worldwide law", said Nabil Abu Rudeinah, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas, dismissing it as another biased move by Mr Trump's administration.

The US and Israel - along with Gulf states the UAE, Bahrain and notably Saudi Arabia - share a strong animosity toward Shiite Muslim regional power Iran.
