A stampede happened as thousands of people gathered near the Pakistan consulate in Jalalabad city in hopes of securing a visa.

Many others were also wounded in the crowd in the provincial capital Jalalabad, provincial council members Ajmal Omar and Suhrab Qaderi told dpa.

Two other provincial officials said over 3,000 Afghans had congregated to collect tokens needed to apply for a visa to travel to Pakistan.

To avoid large crowds from gathering at the visa centre the applicants had been directed to the nearby football stadium, Khogyani said.
