French authorities detain 9 in connection with teacher’s beheading

Police arrest nine after teacher beheaded in Paris suburb

Egypt expressed its "utmost condemnation" of a recent "terror attack" in France, in reference to the beheading of a French teacher by a teenager on Friday in a suburb of the capital over offensive cartoons of Prophet Mohammad.

A teacher who had shown his class controversial cartoons of the prophet Muhammad was beheaded near a school in a Parisian suburb on Friday afternoon.

Anti-terrorism prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard said on Saturday that the photograph was accompanied by a message claiming responsibility for the attack, and was discovered on the assailant's phone found near his body.

The suspect, a resident of Evreaux, a commune an hour west of Conflans-Saint-Honorine, achieved refugee status in France and received a residence permit in March.

"It makes me sad - decapitated, that's shocking", said 15-year-old Virginie, who used to be the murdered teacher's student and said she had "good memories" of him.

"For the first time, a teacher was attacked for what he teaches", said a teacher from a neighboring town who gave only his first name, Lionel.

In a video posted recently on Twitter, a man describing himself as the father of a student asserted that Paty had shown an image of a naked man and told students it was "the prophet of the Muslims".

The man off-camera was known to intelligence services, Ricard said, though he did not say in what capacity.

His half-sister had joined the Islamic State group in Syria in 2014, Mr Ricard said.

Almost a dozen people are being held for questioning in Paty's killing, which took place as he headed home from class.

Paty had been the target of an angry campaign on social media before he was killed.

The prosecutor said that the attacker had been armed with a knife, an airgun and five canisters. He had fired at police and tried to stab them as they closed in on him.

The lesson was related to the ongoing trial over the 2015 attack at the Paris offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which came under fire for its caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

And late last month, after the trial had begun, two people were wounded in an attack near the magazine's former offices that authorities investigated as a possible terrorist act.

"He had no contacts with the (Russian) embassy", Parinov said.

The next day, the father went to see the principal of the school to complain, prosecutors said.

The friend, a known militant, was already on the radar of French intelligence services.

An investigation was under way into "murder linked to a terrorist organisation".

Paty was attacked in the immediate vicinity of the school while on his way home and also had numerous injuries on his head, in the abdomen and upper limbs, authorities stated.

Visiting the scene, Macron said "the entire nation" stood ready to defend teachers and that "obscurantism will not win".

The man said in the video that France's President Emmanuel Macron incites hatred towards Muslims and threatened a demonstration.

Ministers who form France's defense council were to meet Sunday to discuss the Islamist threat. The BBC reported that Paty advised Muslim students in the class to look away if they anticipated being offended.

The motivation for the murder, according to several worldwide media, would have been religious: Paty showed caricatures of the prophet Muhammad during a class on freedom of expression.

"The entire educational community is affected, and beyond it society as a whole", teachers union representative Bernard Deswarte said in Toulouse, where around 5,000 were estimated to have gathered.
