Toronto Police solve case of 9-year-old girl murdered in 1984

The child's body was discovered almost three months later, on December 31, in a farm field about 55 kilometres away in Sutherland.

Genetic genealogy uses existing DNA data to provide a possible family tree from a human sample.

Toronto Police revealed on Thursday that Calvin Hoover was identified through DNA analysis as the person who stabbed Christine Jessop to death back in October 1984. Sources tell CBC News that Calvin Hoover, the Toronto man police now believe committed the crime, died by suicide in 2015.

Genealogist Cece Moore used family tree research to identify Talbott, whose DNA was found on Van Cuylenborg's body and also on her trousers and zip ties found in the couple's van.

Hoover and his wife apparently had a "neighbour acquaintance" relationship with the family at the time, police said.

Toronto Police sent the DNA sample from Jessop's underwear to an American lab.

"I can't imagine how they've felt for all these years and how they feel now", he said. Peter Code. "What we do is we start with an unidentified semen stain that has a DNA profile to it. And it's from that lineage that the investigators then work downwards to be able to try to identify potential persons of interest". Confirmation then came from matching the semen to an autopsy blood sample of his at the Centre for Forensic Sciences in Toronto. While he did have a "dated" criminal record, it was of no significance to the killing.

I am not here to revisit that historical investigation. I can assure you that there is a great sense of relief, and it's not just in the policing profession. "The justice system failed me but science saved me". "But it is good to know that the perpetrators been finally identified".

We have also met with Mr. Morin this morning and have shared this news with him.

"It's a good reminder that when you convict the wrong person you're not getting the right person, you're not getting the real killer". They also informed Morin, who spent 18 months in prison and a decade under a cloud before DNA evidence cleared him of the crime in 1995. "They have been through a awful ordeal for 36 years since they lost Christine in 1984".

"We are asking for the public's help as we look for information about Calvin Hoover, in an effort to create a timeline of his whereabouts and the last moments of Christine's life", he said.

"I am grateful that the Toronto Police stayed on the case and have now finally solved it".

Morin's conviction remains one of the most famous miscarriages of justice in Canadian history.

February 7, 1986 - Trial by jury acquits Morin of Jessop's murder. He was acquitted at his first trial, found guilty of first degree murder at his second trial before a successful Crown Appeal ultimately led to his acquittal in 1995 on fresh evidence submitted jointly by the Crown and the Defense.
