Coronavirus: Household visits banned as part of new restrictions

BREAKING Number of new cases of Covid-19 in Limerick drops to four-day low

Public health officials have said the covid-19 lockdown should last for six weeks. The decision will be the government's but the rapidly deteriorating Covid situation must be addressed.

New restrictions on household visits came into effect across Carlow and Kilkenny as well as most of the country today.

Mr Martin added that the Government would undertake "detailed consideration examining all aspects of this and make sure that when we respond, it will be a comprehensive response".

The border counties - Cavan, Monaghan & Donegal - moved to Level 4.

Level five restrictions would see people banned from traveling further than 5km from their home, no public gatherings other than small funerals or weddings would be permitted and pubs and restaurants would only be allowed to provide delivery or takeaway service.

New Covid restrictions for Stansted and other places in Essex from Saturday
On Thursday, Mr Burnham said Greater Manchester would "stand firm" against plans to move it into Tier 3, calling it a "flawed" and "unfair" policy.

Although the letter has not been published as of yet (it will be made available to the public here), multiple government sources have confirmed the NPHET recommendation to RTÉ News. However, the Taoiseach is still in Brussels on Friday and it is unclear if any of these meetings will take place.

It's understood that NPHET recommended that schools remain open in spite of the increased restrictions.

The recommendation comes less than two weeks after Nphet controversially recommended level five restrictions. There is now a total of 47,427* confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.

In its daily statement, NPHET announced that the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HSPC) has today, October 16, been notified of three additional deaths related to COVID-19.

Cases are now growing at a faster pace and Ireland's Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said this week that his team had not retracted its lockdown advice.
