TikTok Files Request For Injunction to Halt Trump's Looming Ban

Chinese-owned short-video app Tik Tok has about 100 million users in the US making it an influential social media platform among teens and young adults

TikTok asked a USA judge on Wednesday to block an order from Trump's administration that would require Apple and Alphabet's Google to remove its short video-sharing app for new downloads from Sunday.

A more comprehensive ban is scheduled for November, about a week after the presidential election. If it's not sold by that date, there will be more restrictions on the app. Trump signed an executive order on August 14 giving ByteDance 90 days to relinquish ownership of the app to US-owned firms.

As stated by TikTok newsroom, TikTok's interim head, Vanessa Pappas, had sent a letter to the heads of nine social and content platforms proposing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

TikTok has "made extraordinary efforts to try to satisfy the government's ever-shifting demands and purported national security concerns", ByteDance said in its filing.

Oracle and Walmart "are going to own the controlling interest", he added. According to The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Trump spoke with Walmart CEO Doug McMillon about the deal over the weekend.

ByteDance worked out an agreement for TikTok with Oracle Corp. and Walmart Inc. that appeared at first to win Trump's blessing, but negotiations have been thrown into chaos because of disagreements over the supposed terms. It says the deal allows these USA companies to take-over TikTok using "bullying and extortion" tactics.

As competing statements deepened the mystery over the app's future, ByteDance earlier said TikTok Global plans to launch a "small round of pre-IPO financing" after which it would become an 80 percent-owned subsidiary of ByteDance. ByteDance is now seeking a valuation of $60 billion for TikTok Global in which ByteDance may end up owning as much as 80 percent after investments from Oracle and Walmart.

Almost 400 Whales are Dead in One of World's Worst Beaching Tragedies
It remains unclear what drew the whales to the shore, but scientists say pilot whales, in particular, have strong social bonds. The causes of mass strandings remain unknown - even to scientists who have been studying the phenomenon for decades.

Chinese media have criticised the deal, suggesting that the Chinese government is not happy with the arrangement. "China has no reason to give the green light to such a deal".

The officials have unresolved concerns about the national security implications of the proposal, as competing camps emerge inside the administration, said the person, who asked not to be identified discussing internal deliberations.

Meanwhile, ByteDance has applied for a licence in China in line with the country's technology export requirements.

ByteDance said it is waiting for a decision from the bureau on acceptance of the application, without giving details of the application.

It did not say whether the application was related to the continuing negotiations over its U.S. operations.

TikTok will ban ads that promote fasting apps and weight loss supplements, as part of its policy to restrict ads of products that amplify body shaming, the company said on Wednesday.
