Trump to host Israeli, Arab leaders for historic peace signing

Hundreds of people massed on the sun-washed South Lawn of the White House to witness the signing of agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Gulf Arab countries had long conditioned full normalization of ties with Israel on it providing concessions and progress on the two-state solution, envisioning an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. Until now, Israel has had peace deals only with Egypt and Jordan.

Mr Trump said on Tuesday he was willing to sell the warplanes to the UAE despite Israeli opposition.

Emirati Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the brother of Abu Dhabi's powerful crown prince, even thanked Netanyahu for "halting the annexation" of West Bank land claimed by the Palestinians in exchange for Emirati recognition.

Despite the White House being fenced off, the demonstrators wanted all attendees at the ceremony to hear their voices, and know that despite the agreements being labelled as "peace deals", Palestinians will be put in more harm's way as a result. The Israeli military said the rockets were fired from Gaza and one was intercepted by air defenses.

"They are choosing a future in which Arabs and Israelis, Muslims, Jews and Christians can live together, pray together and dream together side by side in harmony, community and peace", the president said.

The Palestinians have not embraced the USA vision. Mr Cooper also contends Israeli security have told the White House they are concerned about the 70-year-old Netanyahu contracting a virus that has killed over 194,000 people on U.S. soil, and were threatening to keep him at a Washington, DC, hotel. But that does not mean mask-wearing will be mandatory. The men then descended a staircase and sat at tables on the lawn to sign statements in English, Arabic and Hebrew.

"The ultimate piece is it's good for us to have, and it's good for Israel", he said.

A week after the Israel-Emirates deal was announced, Palestinians draped a black banner of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas over the wall near Damascus Gate with the accompanying headline "The rightful owner".

Israel to impose a three-week nationwide lockdown starting Friday
The Israeli government says it will impose a nationwide lockdown later this week due to a resurgence of coronavirus infections. The Three-week lockdown will make Israel the first country to reimpose such stringent restrictions on a national scale.

USA officials believe the momentum will eventually force the Palestinian Authority to negotiate an agreement with Israel. Netanyahu, facing backlash from Israeli conservatives back home, has sought to downplay that part of the agreement as a temporary concession.

"This is peace in the Middle East without blood all over the sand", the president said.

"After decades of division and conflict we mark the dawn of a new Middle East", Mr Trump said. It was left to the leaders whether to shake hands, the official told reporters.

Palestinian leaders have urged demonstrations in the occupied territories and outside embassies of the United States, Israel, Bahrain and the UAE to protest what they called "shameful agreements".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she welcomed the agreement but raised some concerns.

The defense minister says the proposed sale of the advanced warplanes to the Emiratis was a "serious matter" with potentially major ramifications on Israel's military advantage in the region.

The Trump administration has not disclosed what concessions, if any, were granted to Bahrain for its agreement. Some analysts see Israel's peace deals with the UAE and Bahrain as a strategic realignment of Middle Eastern countries against Iran.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and point man for the Middle East, praised the UAE and Bahrain decisions.
