HHS Spokesman Michael Caputo: People Should 'Buy Ammunition'

Michael Caputo

"It is clear Secretary Azar can not meet his basic responsibilities while allowing Michael A. Caputo, a yes-man for President Trump with no scientific expertise who publicly attacked CDC scientists and privately interfered with key CDC reports, to continue serving in such an influential role", Murray continued.

Caputo made the reported announcement after going on a long Facebook rant in which he peddled conspiracy theories and warned that his "mental health has definitely failed".

In addition, Democrats on the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis sent a letter to HHS Secretary Alex Azar, seeking to interview Caputo and other top HHS officials "regarding efforts by the Trump Administration to block the publication of accurate scientific reports related to the coronavirus crisis".

During a Facebook live session Sunday that has since been removed from the social media platform along with his entire personal account, Caputo baselessly claimed that "there are hit squads being trained all over this country" to prevent President Donald Trump reelection. "This weighs heavily on us and we deeply appreciate the friendship and support of President Trump as we address these matters and keep our children safe", Caputo said in a statement to NPR. "The drills that you've seen are nothing". "You understand that they're going to have to kill me, and unfortunately, I think that's where this is going", Caputo said, according to the Times.

Besides claiming officials in the CDC were working against the president, Mr Caupto also said his family's safety was at risk.

United Nations rights chief discussing visit to Xinjiang with China
Morgan said. "It will disrupt supply chains and contribute to a worsening situation between the USA and China and less trust", he said.

At his meeting with staff members Tuesday, Caputo apologized for his remarks and the embarrassment they brought upon the agency, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the proceedings. He added that harassment included what he deemed to be death threats.

"Mr. Caputo is a critical, integral part of the President's coronavirus response, leading on public messaging as Americans need public health information to defeat the Covid-19 pandemic", HHS said in an emailed comment to Bloomberg, which first reported on the matter.

During his broadside, Caputo took aim at the CDC, claiming without evidence that scientists "deep in the bowels of the CDC have given up science and become political animals".

Mr Caputo's conspiracy theory about the "resistance unit" of U.S. doctors and health officials closely mirrors rhetoric from the Oval Office, where Mr Trump has spouted baseless accusations of his own about a "deep state" conspiracy to prevent the rapid production of a Covid-19 vaccine. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Trump has repeatedly downplayed the significance of the virus, sometimes contradicting his own White House task force doctors.

Caputo also referenced a contract he is overseeing between HHS and a marketing firm handling a campaign on coronavirus.
