Death toll in West Coast wildfires reaches 35, officials anxious about winds

Oregon wildfires: Apocalyptic cloud of smoke covers US west coast – 40,000 people evacuate

Twenty-four people have died in California, while OR and Washington state have recorded ten deaths and one death, respectively.

However, numerous California blazes have roared through coastal chaparral and grasslands, not forest, and some of the largest are burning on federal land.

Biden, slammed by Republicans for not visiting disaster areas, spoke from his home state of DE on the threat of extreme weather that climate scientists have said is supercharging fires.

Calling Trump a "climate arsonist", Biden said: "If we have four more years of Trump's climate denial, how many suburbs will be burned by wildfires?"

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has argued that the fires are driven mostly by global warming, acknowledged as he met with Trump that better forest management was needed. "But then you pull up, and the devastation of just every home, you think of every family and every situation and every burnt-down vehicle, and there are just no words for it".

What else did Trump say about the climate?

"It was an opportunity to remind the president that 57% of the forested land in the state of California is under federal jurisdiction, just 3% under the state's jurisdiction", said Newsom about his meeting with President Trump earlier in the day.

On Monday, Mr Trump also claimed that other countries had not dealt with the same level of forest fires, despite major conflagrations in Australia and the Amazon rainforest in recent years that experts attributed to the changing climate.

But he said the overwhelming cause of the problem is far bigger. And is China going to change its ways? She has tweeted that Trump has "denied evidence" the fires were "intensified by the climate crisis".

He pulled the United States out of the Paris climate agreement, which committed the U.S. and 187 other countries to keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2C (3.6F) above pre-industrial levels.

To that, Trump replied, "Absolutely".

What's the latest on the ground?

All told in California, almost 17,000 firefighters were battling 29 major wildfires on Sunday, Cal Fire said.

Justin and Hailey Bieber celebrated their second wedding anniversary
The couple twinned in white T-shirts and clicked various selfies with goofy expressions that they later shared on social media. While Justin has regularly posted solo on his own page, for their first TikTok moment together, Hailey has also been featured.

More than 30,000 firefighters are battling the blazes, with wind gusts and drier weather on Monday threatening more destructions.

In California, more than 4,000 homes and other structures have been destroyed over the past three weeks.

At least 10 people have been killed in Oregon. Officials have said dozens of people are missing and warned that the death toll could rise.

To people in Oroville, it's evident how devastating fires like these can be.

What are the politicians saying?

"The debate is over around climate change".

"The hots are getting hotter".

"This is a wake-up call for all of us that we've got to do everything in our power to tackle climate change", the Democratic governor said.

Democratic senator Jeff Merkley described the situation as "apocalyptic" on ABC's This Week.

What role is climate change playing?

Smoke from the California wildfires continues to blanket much of the American west coast and, incredibly, has now moved into the GTA. Both Oregon and California have warmed by more than 1C since 1900.

Most of the fatalities have occurred in California and OR, with emergency services in the two states recording 26 deaths. In Oregon, the spate of fires burned nearly twice the amount of average annual losses in a week. "It's really a fuel for a fire".
