AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine trials resume in Brazil

Serum Institute gets nod to resume clinical trials of Oxford COVID-19 vaccine in India

Volunteers are expected to receive a second shot of the adenovirus-based viral vector vaccine within 21 days of the first. In addition to this, SII can also cooperate with the Gamaleya Research Institute in Russian Federation to manufacture the Sputnik vaccine for COVID-19 treatment. "I still don't see a proper plan on paper to do that [in India] beyond 400 million doses.you don't want a situation with the vaccine where you have capacity for your country but you can't consume it", he told the paper.

On September 6, the drug maker paused the vaccine trials around the world to allow an independent committee and United Kingdom regulators to conduct a review of safety data.

Global pharma major AstraZeneca announced on Tuesday that the clinical trials will be temporarily halted.

The Serum Institute - located in Pune - has partnered with five other pharmaceutical companies globally, including Novavax and AstraZeneca. Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a global vaccine race is underway, and 9 companies are already in the later phase 3 trials. A spokesperson for the University said that illnesses in large trials happen by chance, but still need to be checked independently.

British clinical trials for the AstraZeneca and Oxford University coronavirus vaccine have resumed following confirmation by a regulator that it was safe to do so, the company said on Saturday. Meanwhile, the decision regarding when to resume the clinical trials rests with the DGCI.

The Federal University of Sao Paulo, which is conducting the paused trials, said in a statement that 4,600 of the planned 5,000 volunteers have been recruited and vaccinated without any of them reporting any serious health issues.

While South Korean authorities would like to inoculate the entire population of 52 million, uncertainty around any vaccine's safety, efficacy and development was limiting investment, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun told a cabinet meeting.

Coronavirus vaccines being developed in China could be ready for use by the general public as early as November, an official with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced.
