The world must work together to plan for long term investment in health in order to better prepare it for any future health crises, the World health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom said on Monday.

So far, 92 lower-income nations are seeking assistance via the COVAX facility, part of the WHO's ACT Accelerator to boost development of vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics to combat the pandemic.

"We don't even know if the vaccine is going to help all population groups".

"I think one would have to say that we are on the edge of losing control", Dr Mark Walport, the British government's former chief scientific adviser, told BBC radio. We wait until the town burns down, then decide we need a fire department.

"The end of the pandemic is the moment that we as a community are going to learn how to live with this pandemic".

India leads the world in new cases reported each day and set a global record last week with 97,570 cases reported in a single day, according to a Reuters tally.

Pompeo says USA ambassador to China to leave post
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledged Pompeo's tweet, but said it had not received notice of Branstad's resignation. That approach has since fallen by the wayside, with US officials like Pompeo calling engagement a failed strategy .

156 of the new cases were reported in Dublin, with cases also reported in Waterford (22), Donegal (13), Wicklow (11), Limerick (nine), Kildare (eight), Clare (five) and 31 spread between Carlow, Cork, Galway, Kerry, Laois, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Offaly, Tipperary, Westmeath and Wexford.

"WHO has been blamed a number of times but communicating on something you don't really know is very very hard", Kluge said.

According to Kluge, as research progresses, knowledge of the virus remains imperfect, meaning that decisions must be made with an incomplete picture.

Authorities in 214 countries and territories have reported about 29.1 million COVID-19 cases and 925,000 deaths since China reported its first cases to the World Health Organisation in December.

Despite the worrying trend, the responses now should not be the same as those adopted in the winter and early spring.
