US Ambassador To SA At Centre Of Alleged Assassination Plot

Iran is considering a plot to assassinate the American ambassador to South Africa, in retaliation for the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, two US government officials told Politico.

Tensions continued to rise between the two countries in the wake of the strike, with the United States ramping up sanctions on Iran and attempting to extend a United Nations arms embargo on the country, which is due to expire in October under a 2015 nuclear deal.

Politico reported that Marks, a South African-born luxury handbag designer, was likely targeted by the Islamic Republic for her proximity to US President Donald Trump.

Noting that "such baseless claims are part of the Trump administration's counter-intelligence campaign against Iran", he said, "The US regime's reliance on anti-Iranian accusations and lies in on the threshold of the presidential election, and at the same, its bullying to the UN Security Council to increase pressure on the Iranian people, was predictable".

USA intelligence chiefs said they have been aware of threats towards Ambassador Lana Marks, 66, since early in the year, but details of the plot against her suddenly became more specific in recent weeks.

You can read the full Politico report here. "It's possible the Iranians took her long friendship with Trump into consideration, the US government official said".

Lydia Ko in sensational finish at ANA Inspiration
The Canadian took her only lead on the 12th hole when Korda made bogey, and it didn't last long. That was her last birdie of the round. "And hopefully, tomorrow I can post a similar round".

"The intelligence community isn't exactly sure why Iranians would target Marks, who has few, if any, known links to Iran", Politico reports.

Iran's history of carrying out overseas assassinations and taking hostages dates back to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, when the current regime seized power.

Iran also repeated its warning that it's still pursuing worldwide legal action against the USA for the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani.

The two countries have since stepped up tit-for-tat attacks on military sites inside Iraq.

Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, the head of US Central Command, said last month he expected a new "response" from Iran to America's ongoing presence in Iraq.
