The Oxford coronavirus vaccine trials are back on after being suspended for an urgent investigation because a volunteer reportedly suffered potentially unsafe side effects.

Scientists and others around the world, including experts at the World Health Organization, have sought to keep a lid on expectations of an imminent breakthrough for coronavirus vaccines, stressing that vaccine trials are rarely straightforward.

Globally around 18,000 people have received jabs of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine as part of its final-stage trial.

ICMR granted approval to KEM and Nair for Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of Covishield last month.

The statement said the UK Medicines Health Regulatory Authority approved trials to resume after an independent review of data "triggered a voluntary pause" on September 6. All routine follow-up appointments continued as normal during this period.

The UK committee concluded its investigations and recommended to the MHRA that trials in the UK are safe to restart.

It also said, "AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, as the trial sponsor, can not disclose further medical information".

The vaccine being developed by Oxford and AstraZeneca is widely perceived to be one of, if not the strongest contender among the dozens of coronavirus vaccines in various stages of testing around the world.

Russian Federation was criticized in the West for allegedly rushing the development of Sputnik V, and for rolling out the vaccine before concluding a third stage of clinical trials.

This COVID-19 vaccine, dubbed AZD1222, aka ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, is being developed in association with biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and is one of several now in late-stage Phase 3 trials.

"Studies on the safety of the vaccination have been reviewed and showed that it is safe and safe for use".

"I think one would have to say that we're on the edge of losing control", Mark Walport, the British government's former chief scientific adviser, told BBC radio. More than 30 Europe-based experts signed an open letter this week publicly voicing their suspicion about the vaccine study, specifically noting "potential data inconsistencies".
