There is one new case of Covid-19 community transmission today.

Auckland has been put under alert level 2.5 - which bans social gatherings of more than 10 people - and those who fail to comply with orders under the Covid-19 Public Health Response Act 2020 may be given a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment or a NZ$4,000 fine.

There have been two new cases of COVID-19 reported in New Zealand today, including a health worker who works at the Jet Park quarantine facility in Auckland.

A deep clean of staff areas in the facility was completed yesterday.

Elsewhere, a protest of a few thousand people in downtown Auckland yesterday afternoon took aim at the Government's use of lockdown and other Covid-19 restrictions.

The update on the number of cases comes as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is about to announce Cabinet's decision on whether to shift alert levels.

Masks will still be mandatory on all public transport, she said.

Since August 11, contract tracing has found 3647 close contacts of cases, of which 3640 have been contacted and are self-isolating - the rest are being contacted.

They are employed to work exclusively at the Auckland quarantine facility and do not work at any other site.

That case has been genomically linked to three cases that have been in the quarantine facility and are linked to the Auckland cluster.

On Saturday, New Zealand reported two new cases of the novel coronavirus, bringing its total number of infections since the start of the year to 1,444.

The total number of active cases in New Zealand is 96.

Numerous attendees of the protest were not wearing face masks and were holding signs against the Covid-19 lockdown, vaccines, the New Zealand government, and several other issues.
