Lampard insists he never wanted Chelsea to become 'an academy club'

Frank Lampard calls Jurgen Klopp comments 'slightly amusing'

Chelsea have spent more than £200million on new recruits in the busiest summer of any Premier League club.

Tomas Kalas's £8.1m move to Bristol City and the exit for David Luiz to Arsenal last summer added to the surplus on the Blues balance sheet, with the exit of additional fringe players bringing total income from player departures at Chelsea over the a year ago to a whopping £226.23m.

Speaking to Metro, Berbatov predicted a 4-0 scoreline to Chelsea FC and said: "First game for Lampard's new signings, everyone will expect them to win, and I am no different". Recruitment is a huge part of trying to be a club that is successful at the top of the Premier League.

'You can go through the Liverpool players - [Virgil] van Dijk, Alisson, [Roberto] Firmino, [Naby] Keita, [Sadio] Mane, [Mohamed] Salah - incredible players who have come at a very high price and Liverpool have done it over a period of time. What we've done is come off the back of a ban and tried to address the situation to improve.

Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak and West Ham defender Declan Rice are also believed to be on Lampard's wanted list and with that kind of financial backing behind them, Chelsea are likely to carry on spending.

"So I think it's par for the course, and I think we all know that there's no point in doing the maths too much because I think we know that Liverpool have spent at a high level, we know they have an incredible coach, we know they have incredible players". The really smart thing Liverpool have done is to believe in their coach and believe in his system for several years.

US, Kosovo’s and Serbia’s governments nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

This has been an unbelievable summer transfer window for Chelsea. That story is great for five minutes and those debuts when you hand them out are really nice, but then it moves very quickly to people asking if you can win games now. It's a great story, but it's a story where they've spent money on players, "Lampard said".

Asked if Chelsea have to accept their transfer business will draw attention from their rivals, Lampard continued: "Yeah and those are the rules because I would maybe reference it elsewhere".

"We live in a world at the moment with a lot of uncertainty".

"Sometimes if you have the opportunity to invest at a club, managers at a top club, you try to do it as well as you can".

Although the spending spree surely excites Chelsea fans, from an outsider's perspective, this could be seen as a disappointing change from a team that promoted their academy products to, let's say, another big-spending side. That's done now, and now we are looking at whether we can get better, whether we can improve as a club?
