Former police officers charged in George Floyd death appear in court

LIVE UPDATES: Tentative 2-week jury selection, 4-week trial format discussed for George Floyd case

According to Neal Katyal, the special attorney designated for prosecution had a conversation with Cahill stating that multiple trials might bring in a heavy burden on these witnesses as well as the court.

However, prosecutors claim four separate trials will be too painful for the Floyd family. Prosecutors listed nine incidents in which Thao was reprimanded for not responding appropriately to a scene, intentionally avoiding police response or falsifying reports. "There are going to be side attacks (from other defense attorneys) that I'm going to have to deal with", said attorney Robert Paule, who represents Thao.

The former officers appeared in court Friday for a hearing on the prosecution's request to hold a joint trial, a defence request to move the trial out of Minneapolis, and other issues.

The family of George Floyd and their attorneys spoke to a cheering crowd of protesters Friday (Sept. 11) outside a downtown Minneapolis courthouse after the four former officers accused in his death appeared in a pretrial hearing.

"We're talking about delaying justice for months, if not years", he said. However, the defense attorneys vouched for different trails for each officer, mentioning that the prosecutors might offer antagonistic defense & the evidence piled up against one could affect another's case.

The officers have already done plenty of finger-pointing in court filings.

From left to right, Derek Chauvin, J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao. Other officers accused in the case have already started saying that in case Chauvin committed any crime, they had no idea about it and never assisted in the same.

"They blame Chauvin", he wrote. They failed to elevate this call as an urgent one or gave any medical assistance.

"If EMS had arrived just three minutes sooner, Mr. Floyd may have survived".

1,000 people voted twice in state primary — Georgia
It's a minimum of one year in prison, up to 10 years, up to a $100,000 fine. This represents 66% of the 1,758,873 votes anticipated at this time.

Body-camera footage from the day Floyd died shows Lane and Kueng approaching a panicked Floyd, who says, "I'm not a bad guy!"and struggles, begging not to be put in a squad auto".

It is "a blatant attempt to kill George Floyd a second time: They kill a person and then assassinate his character", Crump said.

"They are trying to claim some asinine theory about an overdose".

Mr Gray said one advantage to separate trials would be that if Chauvin is tried first and acquitted, the others would essentially be cleared.

The family of George Floyd will attend the Minnesota Vikings' season opener against Green Bay. "Minneapolis Police Department", Crump said.

The hearing was not, however, meant to address the merits of the case, but the practical organization of a trial that promises to be extraordinary. They argued that it would be impossible to receive a fair trial in Minneapolis given all the publicity. But Cahill said he would like to send out questionnaires to potential jurors to find out whether they've been affected by pretrial coverage. They have requested that their cases be moved outside Minneapolis and have filed motions to dismiss the charges.

Also during the Friday pretrial hearing, Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill made a decision to disqualify Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman and his staff from the case, calling their actions "sloppy".

Cahill said Freeman made a mistake by sending his staff to speak to the medical examiners without including independent witnesses on the matter. Freeman has run out of any favors with the local activists, given the way the office had handled the cases against the police officers.

Freeman issued a statement saying his office did nothing wrong and followed the rules, and that he's confident Cahill's order will be withdrawn or changed.
