Chelsea's transfer spend demands title challenge from Lampard

Lampard How Cech And I Attracted Signed Top Players For Chelsea

"I like exactly what Frank Lampard did last season, had to make some courageous decisions, had to endure poor form, rode his luck at times, but it's all starting to come together for Lampard as a manager and Chelsea as a team".

Liverpool won the Premier League a year ago finishing 33 points above fourth-place Chelsea, who were just happy to qualify for the Champions League in a transitional season in which they were hit with a transfer embargo.

"I'm surprised if you didn't think I wasn't under pressure last season".

Lampard and Cech were both well revered during their active years as professional footballers, and the Chelsea manager says their aura and transfer market skills ensured that they lured some of the best players over to the club.

I know expectations will be there. Last year we couldn't recruit and this year the club have made the decision to bring in players. "I found it slightly amusing because I think when you talk about the owners of clubs, I don't think it matters what line of business they come from".

Against a horizon of economic doom for most of European football, Chelsea have set about making up for lost time with a £200 million ($256 million) spending spree to try and reel in Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

"We need to give them all a bit of time, the players that are coming in to hit the ground running". I hope we will improve.

"So I think it's par for the course, and I think we all know that there's no point in doing the maths too much because I think we know that Liverpool have spent at a high level, we know they have an incredible coach, we know they have incredible players".

Lampard said the arrival of the new players "changes the landscape".

Chelsea have been by far the most active team in the transfer market so far, spending almost £250m with more deals on the way.

He said: "I didn't come into the job to fight for fourth place or bring academy players in; I came here to win".

West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice also remains on their wish list.

"I just see it as a group that is hopefully stronger than past year and the players give everything to try to get in the team game after game".

"And we'll be judged on how well we spend the money, how well we coach the players we bring in, and we'll be judged by the results we get".

I was a young player, so was John [Terry] and others in the group, so the core of those young players in the group did react and we managed to form a good group moving forward.
