Samsung to stop supplying smartphone chipsets to Huawei due to U.S. sanctions

Samsung to reportedly stop supplying OLED display panels to Huawei

So even though Samsung may gain more global sales from crippling Huawei, it'll lose one of its biggest clients in terms of component sales.

That is because USA technologies are used in nearly all sectors of chip production from design software to production equipment, according to the sources.

In August, the USA tightened the restrictions on Huawei after adding it to its economic blacklist due to which the suppliers who manufactured chips using United States technology were banned to sell chips to Huawei without a special license.

Another supply problem involving Huawei and former partnerships is in the field of displays.

While this is being extensively reported by South Korean media, the deadline for cutting off Huawei was set in place by the latest round of U.S. restrictions unveiled last month. It recently became the world's top-selling smartphone manufacturer.

If WeChat is no longer available on App Store, Chinese consumers will eventually opt to choose smartphones from Oppo, Vivo or Xiaomi, the sources said. Brands like Qualcomm and MediaTek are trying to get authorization from the USA government to negotiate with the Chinese, but have not yet been successful.

Not all firms are taking the same approach. According to Taiwanese research firm DRAMXchange. Reuters has stated that LG Display and Samsung Display would stop shipments to Huawei because of strict trade restrictions from US.

In response to the various sanctions, the Chinese government funded a domestic semiconductor company called SMIC.

Some have raised concerns that other electronic parts like multilayer ceramic capacitors that are necessary in chip-powered electronics could be influenced by the USA sanction in the long run.

"The conflict will continue because now the Americans recognize they can not tolerate China's emergence as the second largest global power any longer because that will threaten the ideological base of the United States", said Kim.
