WNBA Announces Its Plans For Shortened Regular-Season

"We are finalizing a season start plan to build on the tremendous momentum generated in the league during the offseason", WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a statement, "and have used the guiding principles of health and safety of players and essential staff to establish necessary and extensive protocols".

An official start for training camp, training camp length and start of games has yet to be announced.

Teams will play a 22-game regular season games instead of the originally-scheduled 36 games, followed by a traditional playoff format of single-elimination games for the first two rounds and best-of-five series for the semis and finals.

The men's counterpart, the National Basketball Association, is gearing up for a late-July restart, with 22 of the league's 30 teams likely heading to the Orlando area to continue the season there. The WNBA is still working out details with the players' union, but a recent proposal included opt-out options for players uncomfortable playing in the current environment. "We are excited to bring the Indiana Fever franchise to fans to watch in their homes in all 92 counties in the state as we build our championship culture for fans to engage with this season". Atlanta also drafted 5-9 guard Chennedy Carter out of Texas A&M with the fourth overall selection in the 2020 WNBA Draft.

"In our discussions with the league, we emphasized and they agreed that a strong commitment to a 2020 season will give the WNBA the chance to show the world that it's taking the steps needed to secure our livelihood and well-being, while also providing the opportunity to amplify our collective voice", said WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike in a press release from the WNBA.

The WNBA is the latest sports league to announce plans to reopen, after virtually every sport suspended play months ago.

The WNBA announced that players will still receive full salaries and benefits, despite the abbreviated schedule and the fact that the season will be played without fans in attendance. The regular season will tip-off in late July after each squad gets ample time to train during training camp.
