Jets LB C.J. Mosley opts out of 2020 season

After signing as a free agent prior to 2019, Mosley played just two games in his first season in NY, missing 14 games due to a severe groin injury. Mosley, the most accomplished player on their defense, has made a decision to opt out for the 2020 season, sources told ESPN.

Mosley joined the Jets in 2019 after a stellar five-year run in Baltimore saw him earn four Pro Bowl invitations and second-team all-pro honors.

This will be the second straight season the Jets' defense suffers from Mosley's absence.

By the time the 2021 season rolls around, Mosley will have played just two games for Gang Green.

Williamson missed last season after tearing an ACL in the preseason.

Mosley's contract tolls, which means he still has four years, $56 million remaining on the deal.

He was off to a great start in his regular-season debut with NY when he got hurt. Mosley had six tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception returned for a touchdown in the opener against the. But, he injured his groin late in the third quarter of the game while breaking up a pass. He acknowledged he still wasn't totally healthy in that game, and missed the rest of the season before eventually having surgery in December. So, this was likely an extremely tough decision to make for Mosley. Gregg Williams' unit will now be without both Mosley and Jamal Adams for the 2020 season. Their top returning players are Avery Williamson, Neville Hewitt, James Burgess Jr. and Patrick Onwuasor. He was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list earlier this week but is expected to be ready to play when the regular season begins. He already received $10 million in the form of a roster bonus, paid in mid-March. His decision is final, per the league's opt-out rules.
