Vt. secretary of state calls Trump tweet on delaying election 'dangerous'

President Trump delivers a speech at a Double Eagle Energy oil rig in Midland Texas on Wednesday

"Federal, state and local officials need to continue to work hard to ensure that Americans can vote safely, whether by voting early or on November 3".

Donald Trump posted a series of tweets saying that the 2020 U.S. election should be moved from November 3 to prevent mail-in ballots from making the election "INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT". ". I don't want to see a rigged election".

Mr Biden warned back in April that Mr Trump might try to delay the Nov 3 general election, saying, "Mark my words I think he is going to try to kick back the election somehow, come up with some rationale why it can't be held". Nobody wants that date more than me.

"Nobody who mails in a ballot has their identity confirmed, nobody checks to see if they are even a U.S. Citizen", Miller added, warning that voter fraud could be "happening on a scale of potentially millions of people". "But I also don't want to have to wait for three months and then find out that the ballots are all missing and the election doesn't mean anything", Trump told reporters at a news conference when asked about his tweet suggesting election be delayed. His Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany have voted by mail around a dozen times.

Dr Smith was one of many experts who has slammed Mr Trump's claim that mail-in voting can lead to increased voter fraud.

"It will be a great embarrassment to the U.S.", he wrote.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, both prominent Republicans, dismissed delaying the election. According to a March report from the Congressional Research Service, Congress has since 1845 "required states to appoint presidential electors on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, which represents the date by which voters in every state must cast their ballot for president".

Trump can not change the election date without the approval of Congress, and policymakers in both parties made clear they would oppose such a move.

Barty to skip U.S. Open over coronavirus concerns

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu vowed his state would hold its November elections as scheduled: "End of story".

He claimed delays in mail-in results and lost ballots might mean the election victor isn't clear for weeks or months after the election.

But haven't states delayed their elections?

The increased use of mail-in ballots, according to experts, will likely mean results won't be finalized on the night of November 3 since some states can not begin counting them until Election Day. He attempted to walk back on his claim Thursday afternoon, but still called mail-in voting "dangerous" in a tweet.

Even many Trump supporters have condemned the president's call to delay the election. Trump floated the idea Thursday morning at a time when almost all polls project he will lose against Joe Biden in November.

A spokesman for the Trump reelection campaign, Hogan Gidley, explained that the president "is just raising a question about the chaos Democrats have created with their insistence on all mail-in voting. There actually has not been one poll in the entire course of the run-up to 2020 and throughout 2020 in which Joe Biden has been trailing Donald Trump".

Senator Marsha Blackburn responded to the President's idea during an interview on Fox News Thursday.
