Students to return to class in September with increased safety measures - Province outlines back-to-school plan

Albeit, with a few changes.

Masks for students in Kindergarten through Grade 3 will be encouraged, but not mandatory. "It's also crucial to allowing parents to return to work and to support Ontario's economic recovery".

An updated report Wednesday from a group of doctors and education experts from across the province recommended a daily return-to-class plan with masks or face coverings for high school and middle school students, as well as smaller class sizes and staggered lunch breaks.

School boards, Sarlo said, had not received all the details from the province as of Thursday, but said "there's a guidance memo coming soon with more details, but at this point Algoma District School Board won't be required to cohort our secondary students". Older students will have to wear masks in indoor spaces.

The announcement was made alongside Education Minister Stephen Lecce, Health Minister Christine Elliott, and others at Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School in Whitby.

Ontario elementary school students should plan for a full return to class this fall while high school students in the larger school boards will attend class on alternate days, under the provincial government's back-to-school plan.

The plan is to include how to quickly distribute tablets or laptops to students needing them and an established digital platform to continue courses and maintain communication.

All school boards will adopt secondary timetabling methods that emphasize cohorting of students as much as possible, to limit the number of student-to-student contacts.

You can't have gatherings of more than 10 people but, I guess now schools are exempt? "School plays an important role in many people's lives, and our board looks forward to welcoming everyone back", wrote Rose Burton Spohn, H-SCDSB director of education, in an email. "We will be reaching out to our families within the next week to provide them with more detail and learn what their intentions are for the next school year", Burton Spohn wrote.

Roy doesn't see how the back-to-school plan matches up with current public health restrictions.

"The choice of determining when and if they feel comfortable with their child returning to school during the school and the delivery of live teacher-led synchronous learning when they're not in school", Lecce said.

"I have over 100 text messages from many concerned staff, full of anxiety", she said. Classroom priority will be given to students in kindergarten through Grade 6, to kids who have special needs, and for children of essential workers.

There is still the option for distance learning should parents not want their children to return to school.

Public health nurses will act as support for parents, teachers and administration, as well as be dispatched to schools for training, screening and testing purposes if necessary.

While increased health and safety protocols will be in place, families will be required to self-screen before heading to school.

Sliwa said pre-registration will be required for this locally. "I really am; especially with the numbers that we have in Windsor-Essex", she says.

The government said it will be spending $309 million in funding for the back to school plan, including $60 million for personal protective equipment (PPE) and $80 million for extra staffing.

"We need to weigh the risks of Covid-19 against the harm of school closures".

He said the school plan is created to "look and feels as much as it used to" with five hours of instruction time as well as breaks and lunches.

For both elementary and secondary school, ultimately, it will be up to parents whether to allow their children to attend this upcoming year.
