Phase 3 Trials Of Moderna's Coronavirus Vaccine Begins In U.S.

Donald Trump

The two companies' inoculation is combination of a vaccine based on Sanofi's flu shots and a complementary technology from GSK called an adjuvant, created to improve the vaccine's potency. If the data shows the vaccine is safe and effective, the companies could seek Food and Drug Administration approval sometime in the first half of 2021. Sanofi will get the bulk of the funds. "Today's investment supports the Sanofi and GSK adjuvanted product all the way through clinical trials and manufacturing, with the potential to bring hundreds of millions of safe and effective doses to the American people". It is one of several vaccines in development.

"A significant portion of the funding is earmarked for clinical trials, manufacturing, scale-up and delivery, implying that the actual dose price could be lower than the previous bar for the U.S. set by PFE/BNTX ($19.50/dose)", Mani Foroohar, MD, Managing Director and senior research analyst, Genetic Medicines with SVB Leerink, wrote in an investor note this morning. However, the agency cautioned that healthcare professionals could charge for the cost of administering the vaccine "as is customary with government-purchased vaccines".

"Pharmaceutical companies have been under pressure to keep COVID-19 therapies and vaccines affordable, particularly when the federal government - and taxpayers - have offered substantial funding toward research and development", NRP's Sydney Lupkin said. "For mRNA-1273, we now model pandemic-level pricing similar to PFE/BNTX at $20/dose ($40/course), and see pricing materially above this level as challenging in the pandemic period". The two firms aim to combine the Sanofi-developed antigen, which stimulates the production of antibodies, with GSK's adjuvant technology which bolsters the immune response triggered by a vaccine.

"The envisaged contract with Sanofi would provide for an option for all EU Member States to purchase the vaccine", the Commission said in a statement.

18 new Bureau County cases, one new Marshall County case
Marshall County has now had 22 COVID-related deaths, according to Friday's numbers from the Indiana State Department of Health. Three Douglas County residents have died thus far from COVID-19 or with the virus as a contributing factor in their deaths.

The news comes days after Sanofi announced a deal with the British government to supply up to 60 million doses of the vaccine.

"The (vaccine) doses would be manufactured in European countries including France, Belgium, Germany, and Italy", the companies said in a statement.

Last week, American multinational pharmaceutical company Pfizer and German biotechnology firm BioNTech announced that they had struck a $1.95 billion deal with the United States federal government to produce 100 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine, which is now in phase three trials.

That's the White House initiative aimed at acclerating access to vaccines against Covid-19.
