Louie Gohmert: Anti-gay republican who refused mask has COVID-19

U.S. Attorney General William Barr to be tested for coronavirus

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Wednesday that all lawmakers will now be required to wear a mask while appearing on the chamber floor, a decision spurred by the news that a Republican congressman who has spurned facial coverings had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Gohmert's spokeswoman and chief of staff did not respond to requests for comment.

During that hearing, Committee Chairman Representative Jerry Nadler, a Democrat, admonished some Republicans for not wearing masks, which is now required by committee rules.

Smiling in a video recorded in his Capitol Hill office, he declared he had probably gotten the "Wuhan virus" because he had started wearing a mask over the past week or two - not despite it.

"I$3 f I get it", Gohmert told CNN at the time, "you'll never see me without a mask".

There's no scientific evidence to suggest Gohmert's claims are accurate, and indeed, unless he was sharing his mask with others, his insinuations suggest that he had already contracted the disease before he supposedly "reinfected" himself. However, he was seen without it a few times during the hearing and was seen walking and talking with Barr. Several Republican staff aides for the natural resources panel also planned to quarantine, a spokesman said. A less charitable explanation is that Gohmert is a morally bankrupt jerk who prioritises hypermasculine political posturing to the considerable swathe of Republicans still opposed to mask mandates above the good of his fellow human beings.

Many of those lawmakers who didn't consistently wear masks represent states that are now coronavirus hot spots, including Texas, Arizona and Florida.

He further said that both sides should properly handle differences to bring bilateral relations back to normal track. He said China was committed to peaceful development and did not present a "strategic threat" to India.

Gohmert was planning to fly home to Texas with the president aboard Air Force One Wednesday, but he canceled, an aide said, because of the positive test.

It was evident that following Gohmert's positive test result, the potential spread of coronavirus was on the minds of members of Congress on Wednesday.

"I'm concerned about the irresponsible behaviour of numerous Republicans who have chosen to consistently flout well-established public health guidance", said Rep Hakeem Jeffries, a member of the Judiciary Committee.

Gohmert's case renewed a debate on Capitol Hill about whether lawmakers traveling from other parts of the country should be tested when they return to Washington.

Since 2005 Gohmert has represented a deeply conservative patch of east Texas.

The staffers, who spoke on condition of anonymity with Politico, said they were also ridiculed for wearing a mask at work.
