Huawei overtook Samsung in global smartphone shipments for Q2

Canalys says Huawei shipped 55.8 million devices overtaking Samsung for the first time which shifted 53.7 million units

According to Canalys, this is the first time in nine years that a company other than the South Korean behemoth or Apple Inc. With Samsung and Apple set to launch their flagship devices ahead of the Christmas period, there could be some significant gains, especially with Huawei falling away in the European markets.

Semiconductor maker Qualcomm Inc said it has settled a patent dispute with Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies Co and signed a long-term, global patent licensing agreement with the latter.

The report from Counterpoint claims that for the month of June, it registered just 0.3 percent YoY decline, thanks to the increased smartphone demands and aggressive push from the manufacturers in India.

The Chinese company has felt the heat of U.S. sanctions that have disrupted its business overseas, but the latest numbers show its rising dominance in its home market. Its shipments fell 30 percent year over year, opening the door for Huawei to grab the top spot. While the growth in second-quarter smartphone shipments was in triple digits compared to Q1 deliveries, on a year-over-year basis the Q2 growth in smartphone shipments was a puny 1.4%. In Western Europe, reopening and loosening of restrictions started near the end of the quarter, meaning that much of the first and second quarters were impacted for many of Samsung's key markets.

85 new cases, 1 death in Douglas County
As of Sunday, more than 53,000 cases of novel coronavirus have been confirmed across the state, with more than 1,500 deaths. Twenty-four people are isolated at home, and 51 of the 77 cases have recovered.

But that hasn't stopped Huawei from shipping 55.8 million phones in the second quarter of 2020. Transsion Holdings shipped 12.0 million units million units in the second quarter, up from 9.1 million units in the second quarter of 2019.

"5G smartphone shipments continued their growth streak globally; growing more than 43 per cent sequentially for the quarter". The display business is hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic since the lower consumer demand for smartphones translated into reduced shipments of small- and mid-sized panels. That helped it to narrow its gap with Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi, which finished second, third and fourth, respectively, all suffering double-digit declines, Canalys said.

The rest of the Top 10 global OEMs all saw shipments decline. Apple moved more than 500 million yuan ($72 million) of devices in a single day during JD's "6.18" shopping marathon, the Chinese company said. Also, its market share is 13.5%. As a result, the Chinese company has a almost non-existent market share in the US. Its market share is 8.6%, ranking fifth.
