Hong Kong Postpones Legislative Elections by One Year, Sparking Outcry

HONG KONG-CHINA-POLITICS-UNREST

Among those actions was "expressing an objection in principle to the enactment of the National Security Law", as well as asking a foreign government to intervene in Hong Kong's politics and expressing an intention to "indiscriminately" vote down government proposals - all of which are things many opposition candidates have done in recent months.

Beijing has said the law will restore stability after last year's huge and often violent pro-democracy protests.

A dozen opposition candidates have been disqualified from running as candidates, and several very young activists have been arrested.

"Beyond any doubt, this is the most scandalous election ever in Hong Kong history", Wong said at a news conference earlier on Friday.

The opposition had hoped to win a majority in the Legislative Council by capitalising on popular dismay at Carrie Lam's government and the repressive national security law imposed on the territory by Beijing.

"If elections are held in September, even if they disqualify a lot of pro-democracy candidates, the government could still end up with less support from voters", he stated.

In Washington, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Friday the Trump administration strongly disapproved of Hong Kong's decision to postpone the election. Hong Kong had registered some 3,100 infections as of Thursday, more than double the tally at the start of the month.

Trump Vows to 'Respond Appropriately' If Russian Bounty Allegations Proven True
Biden accused Trump of 'dereliction of duty, ' admitting that he isn't sure if the president was briefed on the alleged bounty. They also said that the intelligence had not made its way to the president's desk.

Beijing-backed Lam said she had to invoke an emergency law to make the postponement and no political considerations were involved in the decision. She also cited concern for alleged Hong Kong permanent residents stranded in mainland China and overseas due to travel restrictions, saying it would be "impossible" for them to return to Hong Kong for the election.

The report said that the invasion "would offer RedDelta a view of the Holy See's position before the renewal of the agreement in September 2020", providing "valuable intelligence" about what Hong Kong Catholic entities think about the pro-democracy movement The Vatican, for its part, did not speak out.

Beijing and the Hong Kong government have reassured people that the law affects only an extremely small number of people and would not undermine Hong Kong's freedoms guaranteed under the "one country, two systems" principle that has been in place since 1997.

According to article 104 of that legal document, members of the Legislative Council must swear to uphold the Basic Law and swear allegiance to Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

"Our sources and investigation show that the group recently announced on social media to set up an organization that advocates Hong Kong independence", Li Kwai-wah, an officer from a new national security unit within the Hong Kong police told reporters. "If they destroy that, if they take that down, it will be another marker that will simply prove that the Chinese Communist Party has now made Hong Kong just another Communist-run city".

On Wednesday four students were arrested under the new law for "inciting secession" through posts on social media.

Hong Kong police declined to comment.
