British filmmaker Alan Parker dies at 76

Director Sir Alan Parker who made Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express and Evita has died at the age of 76

A statement from a spokeswoman, sent on behalf of the family, said Parker died this morning "following a lengthy illness". Though not a commercial success outside of the Parker's home United Kingdom, it was a critical smash and garnered eight BAFTA nominations and three wins and three Golden Globe nominations.

Yet he was never honoured at the Oscars, despite being nominated twice for best director.

Film director David Puttnam, who produced some of Sir Alan's films, was among those paying tribute.

Alan Parker's movies won 10 Academy Awards and 19 British Academy Film Awards.

He also directed Pink Floyd's cult musical "The Wall" in 1982, the USA racial injustices drama "Mississippi Burning" in 1988, and the cheerful 1991 musical comedy drama "The Commitments", based on the eponymous novel by the Irish writer Roddy Doyle.

In November 1995, he was made a CBE for services to the British film industry and he received his knighthood in 2002.

Parker is survived by his wife, his five children, and his seven grandchildren.

The box-office smashes came in quick succession after that with Fame, Birdy, Angel Heart and Mississippi Burning all enhancing his reputation.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, which hands out the Oscars, said on Twitter: "From Fame to Midnight Express, two-time Oscar nominee Alan Parker was a chameleon". His work entertained us, connected us, and gave us such a strong sense of time and place.
