McDonald's will require customers to wear face coverings

Chicago-based McDonald's said that 82% of its restaurants are in states or localities that require facial coverings for both employees and customers. The move, announced Friday, July 24, 2020 will be in effect on August 1.

There are more than 4 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the U.S.as of Friday, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

"This public health crisis continues, with 1 million new COVID-19 cases in the last two weeks alone", Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald's United States of America, and Mark Salebra, chair of the National Franchise Leadership Alliance, said in a joint statement. They could also offer a free drink the next time the customer comes in, as long as they wear a mask.

"Additionally, we will provide training for our restaurant staff to ensure they are prepared to address this new policy in a friendly and positive way".

McDonald's has issued more than 50 process and procedure changes since the coronavirus pandemic started.

The company now emphasizes "McDelivery" through Uber Eats or DoorDash, for instance, and it urges customers to use mobile apps for contactless ordering and curbside pickup. The rule on face coverings could be a challenge for workers to negotiate. It also adds the company's considerable name to a growing list of major retailers taking that step, including giants like Walmart and Target.

Meantime, McDonald's joining a long list of businesses that are now requiring masks for customers.

Now, McDonald's is also adding some protect- other protective measures such as putting in protective panels between customers and employees, and also hitting pause on reopening of dining rooms.

Iconic fast-food chain McDonald's announced this week that all of its customers will be required to wear masks.
