One Dirty Joke Captured Carl Reiner's Comedic Genius

Carl Reiner

It is with great sadness that ComingSoon.net (via Deadline) must report the passing of writer, director, actor and comedy legend Carl Reiner of natural causes at age 98.

Inspired by his experiences as a comedy writer for the often hard Caesar, Reiner created - and produced and wrote - the acclaimed The Dick Van Dyke show, a smart and sophisticated sitcom that paired Van Dyke, as the Reiner stand-in, and a newcomer named Mary Tyler Moore as his wife.

But many remember Reiner for The Dick Van Dyke Show, one of the most popular television series of all time and a model of ensemble playing, physical comedy and timeless, good-natured wit.

In later years his film credits as director include "Oh God", starring George Burns, in 1977; "The Jerk", with Steve Martin in 1979; and "All of Me", with Martin and Lily Tomlin, in 1984. Arguably the most effective was The Man with Two Brains (1983), a sci-fi spoof in which Reiner offered full rein to Martin's brand of absurd, deadpan silliness. He reprised the role in Ocean's Twelve (2004) and Ocean's Thirteen (2007), and even filmed a cameo for 2018's Ocean's Eight alongside Matt Damon which was ultimately cut from that film.

Gunmen attack Pakistani stock exchange, six killed
Baloch nationalists have long accused the central government of exploitation, and denying the province its due rights. Its director, Abid Ali Habib said the gunmen made their way from the auto park and "opened fire on everyone".

Another added: "Any young actors who want to pursue comedy, study Carl Reiner". The world will miss him just once: Continuously.

Originally ad-libbed by Reiner and Brooks at a party, the sketch evolved into a perennial TV favourite and basis for five comedy albums, the latest of which earned a 1998 Grammy Award. "It was about me and my wife, living in New Rochelle and working on the Sid Caesar show".

"Nothing pleases me more than knowing that I have lived the best life possible by having met & marrying the gifted Estelle (Stella) Lebost-who partnered with me in bringing Rob, Annie & Lucas Reiner into to this needy & evolving world", he wrote. Joseph Stein adapted Reiner's autobiographical novel Enter Laughing into a play, and later turned it into the musical So Long, 174th Street. Reiner returned to that role in two "Ocean's" sequels. As I write this my heart is hurting.

But Reiner never strayed far from television, continuing to make guest appearances on various shows such as "Two and a Half Men" and "Hot in Cleveland" well into his 90s, as well as keeping up a busy Twitter account.
