MS to change state flag after pressure from NCAA, SEC

Mississippi Changes Flag - ESPN 98.1 FM - 850 AM WRUF

INSKEEP: The state Senate voted on Sunday to retire the current 126-year-old flag.

On Monday, C-USA acknowledged that the 2022 tournament is now back on track for Hattiesburg.

With a stroke of the governor's pen, MS is retiring the last state flag in the USA with the Confederate battle emblem - a symbol that's widely condemned as racist.

"We need something that fulfills the goal of being a state flag and that everybody in the state has a reason to be proud of", said Mike Leach, football coach at Mississippi State University.

It calls for the immediate removal of the existing flag and the creation of a commission to design a new one. After it is played at USM's Pete Taylor Park for a sixth time in 2022, the 2023 event will take place at Rice's Reckling Park.

The decision to take the Confederate flag out of the MS flag was approved by the state legislature today, and the governor has said he will sign the bill into law. MS voters will then vote on the new design in November. From Southern Miss to high schools, he stays on top of it all.

This year's iPhones might not include a charger in the box
As the month of September approaches, rumors and reports about the upcoming iPhone 12 series have started making rounds. For the ones who don't have, Apple would earn extra revenue if they have to go back to Apple to purchase the same.

The flag of the Confederacy, its symbols and the statues commemorating Confederate leaders have long divided the country.

"Today is a history-making day in the state of Mississippi", Simmons told colleagues.
If they reject it, the commission will draft a different design using the same guidelines, to be sent to voters later. Johnson said, "The flag is just a beginning", referring to his political rival Mississippi's Republican Speaker of the House Philip Gunn who was standing next to him. It held hearings across the state that grew ugly as people shouted at each other about the flag.

"How sweet it is to celebrate this on the Lord's day", Gunn said. Instead, they added the issue on a 2001 statewide ballot, in which MS citizens voted in favor of keeping the flag.

The Mississippi Economic Council and the Mississippi Historical Society have also recently come out in support of changing the state's flag. We are a people of great faith. And I made it clear to people that it certainly was a flag that represented some Mississippians and not all. "We do believe that whatever the new design is needs to be something that unifies the state". "I am so emotional", said Myrlie Evers the widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers said according to the Mississippi Center For Investigative Reporting.

And so I had my own personal experiences regarding discrimination and had my father and grandfather that shared many of their experiences, and how the flag was just a constant reminder that communities of color or Black Americans in MS was just still not part of Mississippi.

The Mississippi vote formalizes a similar push.
