McGrath Wins KY Senate Primary, Will Challenge McConnell In November

Booker's profile surged amid national protests over the deaths of Black Americans in encounters with police, including the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor by Louisville police. The 35-year-old Booker supports the Green New Deal (he often refers to it as the "Kentucky New Deal"), a universal basic income and "Medicare for All".

Amy McGrath won a closely-watched and surprisingly close Senate Democratic primary in Kentucky, CNN projected on Tuesday. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also backed Booker.

"Extreme Amy McGrath is lucky to have gotten out of the primary with a victory, but her reputation sustained significant damage all across Kentucky", Cooksey said. The Associated Press declared her the victor with 89 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday afternoon, where she had a almost 9,500-vote advantage over Booker.

The news means that McGrath will advance in her effort to unseat Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the fall.

Within minutes of McGrath scoring her win in the primary, McConnell's campaign welcomed her into the general election ring, already seeking to cast her as a "tool of the Washington Democratic establishment".

"There is no doubt that Charles tapped into and amplified the energy and anger of so many who are fed-up with the status quo and are rightfully demanding long overdue action and accountability from our government and institutions", McGrath said. Booker held a narrow advantage over McGrath in a large field based on early and in-person totals released a week ago.

She also congratulated Booker "for his very impressive result" and urged party unity in seeking to oust McConnell (R-Ky.).

McGrath, who in 2018 had run for Congress unsuccessfully in Kentucky, raised tens of millions of dollars for the Senate race, and had the backing of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

"Standing in the streets crying with people who are facing trauma, the same trauma I carry from cousins who have been murdered over the last four years, the commonwealth has really taken note", Booker said in the final days of the campaign.

When McGrath and McConnell's respective positions on term limits were factored into the RMG Research survey, support for the Democratic candidate increased to 45 percent.

McGrath accuses McConnell of spending too much time on tax cuts for the wealthy and not enough time on affordable health care, hitting his vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act. She was forced to backtrack in July 2019 after saying she "probably" would have voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. McConnell's campaign has said McGrath is too liberal for Kentucky, on issues from abortion to border security.

Many Kentucky counties chose not to report any absentee results until one week after the June 23 primary. She accused of the GOP-led Senate of lacking "the guts" to put a check on "out-of-control presidential power".
