Europeans' trust in United States falls during coronavirus pandemic, survey finds

According to a report, the European Union has named 14 countries whose citizens it feels are "safe" to travel to the continent amid the coronavirus pandemic but the United States, China, Brazil and Russian Federation have been excluded from the list.

Whatever is decided in Brussels will exist only as a recommendation since border control remains a national competence and a limited number of flights to and from banned countries have continued throughout the crisis.

The United States is now the country most affected by COVID-19 with more than 125,000 deaths - while Europe believes it has passed the peak of its outbreak.

Talks dragged on with some European Union members wanting to limit the reopening to countries with an epidemiological situation "comparable or better" than that in the bloc - that is with 16 or fewer cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants over the past two weeks.

The UK is now negotiating "air bridges" with several European Union member states, so that coronavirus does not totally block summer holidays - the busiest season in Europe for tourism, which employs millions of people.

More than 15 million Americans are estimated to travel to Europe each year, while some 10 million Europeans head across the Atlantic.

This means United States infection rates will need to dramatically drop if Americans are to be allowed entry to European countries, just as the European tourism industry enters what are traditionally its peak months.

European Union releases list of 14 "safe" countries for travel
Russian Federation and Brazil, along with the United States, are among countries that did not make the initial "safe list". Kenya is among countries that have been banned to travel to Europe.

One study in Italy said the loss of American tourists would mean a loss of €1.8 billion in revenue.

The EU is set to name 14 countries whose citizens are deemed safe to let into the bloc from 1 July, despite the pandemic, with an official announcement expected on Tuesday.

Countries like France and Germany have along with the Commission stressed the need for a "common and coordinated approach" and don't want individual states going it alone.

The EU imposed restrictions on non-essential travel to its 27 nations, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, which are part of the Schengen open-borders area, in March to halt the spread of the virus.

China made it to the list, which will be updated every two weeks, but under the condition that Beijing do the same for Europeans, a statement said.

It is said the countries however managed to create a list of the countries with a better epidemiological situation, the citizens of which will be able to enter Europe by the end of next week.
