Coronavirus Lockdown: Europe Reopens Borders to 15 Countries, US Excluded from List

EU Plans to Bar Most US Travelers When Bloc Reopens

The EU members will continue to work on Monday on the list of countries that can be reopened for traveling to and from in early July, the spokesperson for the European Commission said.

The United States is now the country most affected by COVID-19 with more than 125,000 deaths while daily infection rates in Europe have stabilised.

China made it to the list, which will be updated every two weeks, but on the condition that Beijing do the same for Europeans, a statement said. At the same time, the European Union regulations stipulate that it is up to national governments to make decisions on border-crossing and travel issues rather than European Union bodies.

USA neighbour Canada as well as Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Uruguay were included without conditions on the list which was drawn up by diplomats on Friday, but required final approval.

The list details the countries whose citizens will be allowed to enter 31 different European countries, with non-essential travel expected to resume on Wednesday. Americans are nearly certain to be excluded in the short term due to the number of USA coronavirus cases, alongside Russian Federation and Brazil.

Google’s Verified Calls to help you better tackle pesky calls
If you're using Google's Phone app , you'll soon be able to know why a business establishment is calling before you even pick up. Google says the feature will be turned on by default on compatible devices, although users can choose to turn it off.

The list was finalized on Tuesday, with further details about possible restrictions and COVID-19 checks expected to be announced later in the day.

Russian Federation and the United States were not included into the list, in line with epidemiological criteria.

Other countries include, Mongolia, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Palau, Paraguay, Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Serbia, South Korea, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Vatican City, Venezuela, Vietnam and Zambia.

One of the criteria for reopening borders is that the number of COVID-19 cases should not exceed 16 per 100,000 of the population for at least two weeks in the country that the European Union wants to open borders with.
