Bharat Biotech's coronavirus vaccine 'Covaxin' gets DCGI approval for human trials

Covid vaccine

Ever since the landscape of the modern world was shaken by the COVID 19 pandemic, everyone has been asking the same question: "Where is the vaccine?".

"Stoffels, who is also vice chairperson of the executive committee of J&J, said the lead vaccine candidate is a non-replicating viral-vector vaccine that contains a piece of DNA that codes for the coronavirus 'spike" protein. The formula was developed by a combined military research unit and the biotech firm, the company said Monday. As per the reports, ten million people are infected with coroanvirus across the globe and this deadly virus killed half a million people.

Anges joins some 17 clinical tests of coronavirus vaccine candidates being conducted globally, including by USA biotechnology company Moderna Inc., British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca Plc and China's CanSino Biologics Inc., as the race accelerates.

Announcing the vaccine development milestone, Dr Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director said: "We are proud to announce COVAXIN, India's first indigenous vaccine against COVID-19". Trials started on 17 March.

Shots will not be able to get approval if studies only show that they lead to the development of antibodies in the bloodstream, which is not proof that the vaccine can actually prevent coronavirus infection.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Louisiana Abortion Regulation Law
The justices found the Louisiana measure was almost identical to a Texas admitting privileges law they struck down in 2016. In that decision, now-retired justice Anthony Kennedy joined the court's four liberals to form a majority.

But there is no vaccine now approved for commercial use against COVID-19, the illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. In their place, a piece of DNA that codes for the coronavirus spike protein is inserted.

Covaxin contains a weakened version of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (Coronavirus) which will be injected into the patient's body to elicit an immune response. Human clinical trials are scheduled to start across India next month.

It was not clear how widely it would be used within China's enormous military forces, and the Ministry of Defence did not reply to an AFP request for further information. Since January, J&J has been working directly with governments and health authorities to help end this fast-moving COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the success of results of phase I & II, which would be out by October 2020, we will progress to larger clinical trials. University of Oxford's vaccine is the furthest in the trial, now in the third phase, while there are various candidates in the second phase.

None has yet been approved for commercial use.
