Citing cybersecurity concerns, India blocked Internet access to 59 apps originating in China, including TikTok, WeChat and other entertainment and messaging applications, the government said Monday. India is banning 59 apps with Chinese links, saying their activities endanger the country's sovereignty, defense and security.

Other apps banned by the Indian government include the social media platform WeChat and a video calling app from Chinese mobile phone company Xiaomi.

Meanwhile, TikTok has said that it is in the process of complying with the government's order of banning the app and asserted that it has not shared information of Indian users with any foreign government, including that of China. The government said such concerns also pose a threat to sovereignty and security of the country.

"The government believes these are data-mining apps that compromise the user's data and national security", said Salman Waris, managing partner at New Delhi-based specialist technology law firm TechLegis Advocates & Solicitors.

"We place the highest importance on user privacy and integrity", he said.

An anti-China sentiment has been gaining mindshare in India in recent weeks ever since more than 20 Indian soldiers were killed over a clash in the Himalayas earlier this month. The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERTJN) has also received many representations from czens regarding security of data and breach of privacy impacting upon public order issues. "Likewise, there have been similar bipartisan concerns, flagged by various public representatives, both outside and inside the Parliament of India", the government statement added.
