Two dead in Walmart centre shooting

Shooting Reported at Walmart Distribution Centre in Red Bluff, California

Walmart officials say there is now an active investigation, and that they will continue to assist the Tehama County Sheriff's Office in any way possible.

A shooting on Saturday at a Walmart distribution center in Red Bluff, California left at least two people dead - including the attacker - and four others wounded.

Red Bluff city manager Rick Crabtree told CNN that a vehicle rammed the facility around 3pm local time, causing a fire which he said was not significant. "None of the officers on scene were physically harmed during this incident and the condition of the suspect is unknown at the time of this release", the statement posted on Facebook read.

Allison Hendrickson, spokeswoman for St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff, said two victims died in the attack.

An eyewitness told the New York Times that he heard 50 to 60 shots fired as he and other employees fled the building. It was then that a police officer and a sergeant used their duty rifles and shot at the suspect, he added, NBC News reported.

He crashed his vehicle into the lobby area, causing a fire, where a few employees were working.

'I just know it was a lot'.

Tehama County Sheriff's Office deputies have determined the shooter circled the parking lot four times before crashing into the building and opening fire with the rifle, Johnston said. I hit the panic alarm and called 911 as soon as I could'.

A Walmart employee, Scott Thammakhanty, told the Record Searchlight, a newspaper in Redding, California, that he had heard gunshots and seen people on the ground as he and other employees ran. A man had also reported his leg being run over when the shooter rammed a vehicle into the building, but the man wasn't sure if he had been shot, dispatchers said.

A Walmart spokesman told CNN they were aware of the situation and working with law enforcement to investigate, but could offer no further details.

Red Bluff is located about 130 miles north of Sacramento, the state capital.
