Starbucks pauses all social media ads over hate speech concerns

Why are companies boycotting Facebook? ‘Stop Hate For Profit’ campaign explained

Starbucks and Diageo followed Unilever, Coca-Cola Co. and several other companies in saying they will cut ad spending, part of an exodus aimed at pushing Facebook and other social media platforms to limit hate speech and posts that divide and disinform.

"We believe more must be done to create welcoming and inclusive online communities, and we believe both business leaders and policy makers need to come together to affect real change", the statement said. While a few like Unilever have announced stopping advertisements on all social media platforms for the next six months, Coca-Cola reportedly announced it will be pausing paid advertising on all social media platforms globally for at least 30 days.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg also said the social media platform would ban adverts containing hate speech including content from politicians if it is deemed as inciting violence or suppressing voting.

While the company is suspending its social media ads, it is not joining the #StopHateForProfit campaign bolstering the Facebook advertising boycott, according to CNBC.

The "Stop Profit for Hate campaign" first launched on 17 June, backed by civil rights groups including the NAACP, Color of Change and the Anti-Defamation League.

Facebook market value drops a whopping $56 billion as major corporations pull ads over company's failure to block hate speech and fake news. "If this is the response he's giving to major advertisers withdrawing millions of dollars from the company, we can't trust his leadership".

Other brands joining the pause late last week or over the weekend include Beam Suntory and American Honda (the latter's estimated 2019 U.S. Facebook spend was $6 million).

Organisers of an advertising boycott campaign say they are preparing to go global.

Reportedly more than 100 brands in the USA, including majors like Unilever, Verizon, CocaCola, Honda and the chocolate brand Hershey, have committed to contain advertisements on Facebook.

Moreover, Facebook did not address demands that it refund companies whose ads are displayed next to content that is later removed for policy violations, said Ian Orekondy, chief executive of AdComplyRx, an advertising tech company that helps pharmaceutical brands with their digital ads, which has joined the boycott. Facebook will also not follow a similar policy to fight voter suppression ahead of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Organizers of a Facebook Inc promotion boycott campaign that has drawn assistance from a swiftly growing listing of significant businesses are now getting ready to acquire the fight world-wide to raise stress on the social media firm to take away detest speech.

An explosive new report from The Washington Post claims Facebook has weakened its hate speech and misinformation policies because of Donald Trump's ascent to power.

The idea of the exodus is to put financial pressure on Facebook to change its policies.

Bloomberg noted that prior to the boycott, Facebook "was already bracing for weakness in the second quarter, which ends this week", with CFO Dave Wehner having warned in an April earnings call that he saw the "potential for an even more severe advertising industry contraction".
