India bans dozens of Chinese apps after deadly border clash

TikTok Ban Creators Asking Users to Follow Them on Instagram YouTube

"At the same time, there have been raging concerns on aspects relating to data security and safeguarding the privacy of 130 crore Indians".

India's decision comes as its troops are involved in a tense standoff with Chinese soldiers in eastern Ladakh in the Himalayas that started last month. As per a tweet by Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, "For safety, security, defence, sovereignty & integrity of India and to protect data & privacy of people of India the Government has banned 59 mobile apps".

An Indian government statement noted "raging concerns" with regards to data security and protecting the privacy of its citizens.

The central government banned 59 mostly-Chinese apps on Monday saying they were prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity, and defence of India.

Jayanth Kolla, an analyst at research firm Convergence Catalyst, told TechCrunch the move was surprising and will have huge impact on Chinese firms, many of which count India as their biggest market.

Under Armour seeks to end record-breaking sponsorship deal with UCLA
UCLA and Under Armour's 15-year, $ 280 million deal was the largest in college sports history when it was signed in 2016. Under Armour hasn't received the expected return on investment given UCLA's recent struggles in its marquee sports.

E-commerce giants including USA giant Amazon - which sell huge volumes of Chinese gadgets - have agreed to display the country of origin of goods on their platforms, according to media reports.

India's Ministry of Information Technology said it was banning the 59 Chinese apps after receiving "many complaints from various sources" about apps that were "stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorised manner".

Other banned Chinese applications included music streaming, news, browser, chat and photo apps and games produced by Chinese companies including Baidu and Alibaba. "We have been invited to meet with concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications", said Nikhil Gandhi, Head of TikTok India.

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, Ministry of Home Affairs has also sent an exhaustive recommendation for blocking these malicious apps.

We reached out to TikTok for a response to the ban, but received no immediate response.
