Covid-19 vaccine from China shows promise in human trials

Chinese COVID-19 vaccine shows promise in human trials: Details here

China National Biotec Group (CNBG) said on Sunday that early human test results for a coronavirus vaccine candidate suggested it could be safe and effective, the second vaccine candidate from the firm to show encouraging results in a clinical trial.

CanSino's COVID-19 vaccine candidate approved for milit. Other leading vaccine candidates are the U.S. pharma giant Pfizer, who is working with Germany's BioNTech on developing a candidate now in phase two trials, and also Oxford University/AstraZeneca in the United Kingdom that has a $1.2 billion USA investment attached. About 15 experimental COVID-19 vaccines are in various stages of human study worldwide.

Over the weekend, Sinopharm Group announced that in partnership with the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, they are advancing on clinical trials to develop a COVID-19 vaccine. No vaccine has been approved for use in the general public, which makes China's approval of the CanSino Biologics vaccine noteworthy, even if it's only being used in a limited capacity (the Reuters report says the Chinese military did not say whether or not the vaccine would be mandatory). Two of these are being developed by US-based biotech and pharmaceutical companies and other four by Chinese research institutions.

No vaccine has been approved by any country for commercial use against the disease caused by coronavirus. It can not be expanded to a broader vaccination range without receiving a go-ahead from the Logistics Support Department, the biotech firm said.

Over 10 million coronavirus cases registered worldwide: AFP tally
The rate of infections worldwide has doubled since May 21, with one million new cases recorded in just the last six days. Africa's confirmed COVID-19 cases continued to rise to a new high of more than 371,000, including 9,484 deaths.

In an interview with Chemical and Engineering News, Wistar Institute scientist Hildegund C.J. Ertl, who works on adenoviral vector vaccines, said, "It is not great, but it is better than nothing".

"We will do it at various sites with a certain degree of flexibility" so that the researchers can change rapidly as the virus moves, Fauci said. Once injected, these viral antigens are expressed in human cells that trigger the body's immune response.

These trials, which started on April 12, also involved 1,120 volunteers and the results revealed a good safety record, with no cases of severe adverse effects found in the clinical trials.

But CanSino said that it can not guarantee that the vaccine, which has undergone both phase one and two clinical trials in China, will ultimately be commercialised. Thus, the AstraZeneca vaccine candidate, for example, is the outcome of a British research institution's collaboration with a British-Swedish pharma conglomerate, with clinical testing being done in Brazil.
