India’s Davis Cup tie against Finland postponed to 2021

Davis Cup, Fed Cup finals postponed until to 2021

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has confirmed that India's Davis Cup World Group I tie against Finland due to take place in September this year has been postponed to 2021 in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

All worldwide tennis has been suspended since April, with only a few exhibition events able to take place. The Finals will be played on indoor clay courts at the Laszlo Papp Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

"Due to the ongoing challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, it has not been possible to reschedule the postponed Finals in 2020", the ITF said in a statement. It will instead begin the week starting November 22, 2021.

David Haggerty, ITF President, said this was a "tough decision" they had to make keeping in mind the health and safety of all involved.

While 10 of the 12 qualifiers were European nations - the USA and Australia completed the field - the logistics of such a large event would prove challenging, especially with nations at different stages in the pandemic. Around 60 players, plus support staff, would have assembled in Budapest for the Finals with more for the Davis Cup.

"Hosting the competition without fans was not considered a desirable option, given the unique atmosphere created by national supporters", the ITF said. The ITF will work with the hosts of these ties and events in order to ensure a safe environment in which they can be played next year.

Trump denies being briefed on Russian 'bounty payments' to the Taliban
Russian Federation has yet to comment on the accusations but said Moscow would respond "if someone makes them", referring to Washington.

"It s a huge disappointment for all of us that the Davis Cup Finals will not be held in 2020", said Barcelona football star Gerard Pique, whose Kosmos investment group finances the competition.

"This postponement has no long-term bearing on our collective ambitions for the Davis Cup".

The Davis Cup men's tennis competition has been canceled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic and will pick up again in 2021.

"This is a tough decision to have to make, but delivering an global team event on this scale while guaranteeing the health and safety of all involved ultimately poses too great a risk", worldwide Tennis Federation chief David Haggerty said.

The worldwide tennis body took the decision days after four leading tennis players, including world no. 1 Novak Djokovic, tested positive for coronavirus.

"We appreciate the trust that the ITF has shown in us during these hard times and we look forward to continuing our partnership over the next year and beyond".
