Gunman at Walmart distribution center was former employee

Possible shooting at the Walmart Distribution Center in Red Bluff

A lone gunman entered a Walmart distribution center in Northern California, killing one person and injuring six others with a semi-automatic rifle before police officers killed him, authorities said.

Red Bluff Police later confirmed that a man who opened fire was shot by officers, however, his condition remains unknown.

Johnston said a Red Bluff police officer responded to reports of an active shooter at the center, arriving at the scene within six minutes.

Tehama County Sheriff's Office deputies have determined the shooter circled the parking lot four times before crashing into the building and opening fire with the rifle, Johnston said.

The injured were taken to Red Bluff's St. Elizabeth Community Hospital.

The Tehama County Sheriff's Department is overseeing the criminal investigation into the shooting, while the county District Attorney's Office was investigating the officer-involved portion and a California Highway Patrol accident investigation team was investigating the crash. According to KHSL TV, a fire started at the site with there being about 200 workers inside the facility.

The attacker was confronted and "shot in the chest" by police officers some 15 minutes later.

'It went on and on - I don´t even know how many times he fired, ' Thammakhanty said. His relationship to the shooter was not immediately known.

'I just know it was a lot'.

Mr Thammakhanty and other workers started running for their lives, and he saw people lying on the ground as he went, he said.

Another witness told NBC that they had seen the vehicle drive into the building and burst into flames.

Fellow employee, Franklin Lister, 51, told the New York Times he had just started work when a coworker ran down the hallway shouting: 'Active gunfire!

Vince Krick told the Redding Record Searchlight he was waiting outside because his wife and son work at the facility.

'It was real insane, because, you know, you can't do nothing, ' Krick said. The gunman reportedly drove a white vehicle that wedged into the building.

Dispatchers told the Record Searchlight that at least one woman had been shot.

Red Bluff is located about 130 miles north of Sacramento, the state capital.

Walmart said it was aware of the situation and was working with law enforcement authorities, saying:"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident".
