US tops 2.5 million coronavirus cases: Johns Hopkins

Health officials in the USA have been warning that the country is not even close to defeating the virus, while some states even reimposed the restrictions they just lifted, seeing a sharp spike in new infections - although daily numbers of deaths continue to decline.

The pandemic has now entered a new phase, with India and Brazil battling outbreaks of over 10,000 cases a day, putting a major strain on resources.

The two countries accounted for over a third of all new cases in the past week.

China on Sunday imposed a strict lockdown on almost half a million people in a province surrounding Beijing to contain a fresh coronavirus cluster.

In Latin America and the Caribbean the virus is spreading the most rapidly.

He cited reports from governors that the majority of new cases are for people age 35 and under, with many of those asymptomatic, and said these areas have the hospital capacity, personal protective equipment and medical tools to fight the virus - for the time being.

With Trump struggling to lift his re-election bid off the ground ahead of November, the campaign confirmed that events featuring Vice President Mike Pence in Arizona and Florida next week have been postponed "out of an abundance of caution".

The other countries with over 10,000 deaths are the United Kingdom (43,598), Italy (34,716), France (29,781), Spain (28,341), Mexico (26,381), India (15,685) and Iran (10,364).

In Europe, the number of cases recorded daily has stabilised over the past month at fewer than 20,000, but the World Health Organization has warned of a "significant resurgence" on the continent.
