Florida records 8500 new coronavirus cases in single day

As of Saturday there are 9,585 new positive COVID-19 cases

Florida on Saturday reported yet another alarming surge in coronavirus cases, with a total of 9,585 new infections, marking a new daily record high for the state.

On Wednesday, the USA saw a record number of new coronavirus cases in a single day, with 45,557 reported, according to a tally by NBC News.

Ron DeSantis said Sunday that the state is in "good shape" in its efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

And it is not just those states seeing rising numbers.

The governor said he believes increased group interaction has "led to increases in cases".

All three South Florida counties, along with the Florida Keys, now require masks in public places.

Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College in Houston, said he fears that daily cases in the Houston area could more than triple to 4,000 by mid-July, making it the main global hot spot by then.

At a briefing on Friday, DeSantis blamed the spike in infections on young people interacting more in the last few weeks, adding that they faced a lower risk of dying than older people. And for Florida, which has been eyed as the possible next epicenter, that number reached 8,938 new cases in just one day.

Since June 26, the deaths of twenty-four Florida residents who tested positive for COVID-19 have been reported in Broward, Collier, Dade, Gadsden, Hardee, Manatee, Martin, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Polk and Volusia counties.
