Confirmed cases hit 10 million; Pence skips campaign rallies

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

Vice President Mike Pence backed Texas' governor Sunday and said America is making progress against the coronavirus even as the Lone Star State scales back its reopening plan in the face of skyrocketing case-counts and dwindling hospital space.

Those events came as the number of new Covid-19 cases surged in the nation's three most populous states - California, Florida and Texas - and the U.S.as a whole on Thursday registered another single-day record of more than 39,000 new infections.

Arizona and Florida are experiencing among the sharpest spikes in COVID-19 cases in the wake of lifting lockdowns.

"We have an election coming up this fall", Pence said.

Coronavirus cases are up in over 20 states and territories around the country.

The Vice President was also hotly grilled on Trump's mixed message on testing, saying if there was less the numbers of cases wouldn't be so high.

New clusters of cases at a Swiss nightclub and in the central English city of Leicester showed that the virus is still circulating widely in Europe, though not at the exponential rate of growth seen in parts of the U.S., Latin America and India.

Mo Salah scores Liverpool's 100th goal of the season
Goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Salah, Fabinho and Sadio Mane at Anfield saw Jurgen Klopp's men take another step towards a first league title in 30 years.

In a press event with Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) and other members of the Trump administration, Pence pledged the White House's support for the state in light of the spike it has seen in Covid-19 cases. "We're going to continue to take steps to protect the most vulnerable and testing will be a critical part of that going forward".

He said that the United States is "in a much better place" than it was two months ago, noting the country has more medical supplies on hand now, a smaller share of patients are being hospitalized, and deaths are much lower than they were in the spring.

That person "subsequently began showing symptoms and tested positive for COVID-19", Cuomo said in a statement.

"This is happening because much of the country around Memorial Day, and the weeks that followed, we opened up while we still had a large number of cases", Dr. Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, told "TODAY" on Saturday, adding that the USA lacked the testing and contact tracing infrastructure needed to reopen safely. "Because if you get infected, you are part, innocently or inadvertently, of propagating the dynamic process of the pandemic".

When Pence arrived at the event, he was wearing a mask. Americans' rights of free speech and assembly exist even during the coronavirus crisis, Pence said, as does the principle of individual liberty.

"A risk for you is not just isolated for you", Fauci warned young people Friday.

The Trump campaign faced criticism for holding a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, last week.
