National Hockey League deems season concluded, will resume with 24-team playoff

Detroit Red Wings vs. Philadelphia Flyers

Pittsburgh was six points clear of a playoff spot.

The NHLPA Executive Board had a call on Thursday to discuss the proposed 24-team playoff structure for the NHL's return to play.

The NHL Players' Association has approved a 24-team, conference-based playoff format to restart the 2019-2020 NHL season.

However, the union said via a statement that several details still need to be ironed out before an official agreement can be reached.

St. Paul is interested in being one of those hubs.

The 24-team playoff format will see 12 clubs from the Eastern and Western Conference battle for the Stanley Cup in a tournament that could start this summer and stretch deep into the fall or early winter.

One of the issues that remains open for discussion is whether a playoff bracket will be used, and if the teams would reseed, according to Sportsnet's Chris Johnston. The four teams with byes would each play each other once in tune-up games. With a considerable amount of TV revenue at stake, Bettman has said he's determined to finish the season and award the Cup even if that means delaying the launch of the 2020-21 season. The play-in series in the West would be: No. 8 Calgary vs.

Health officials provide daily COVID-19 update at 3 p.m.
The most recent community outbreak was reported last Thursday at the Nature's Touch frozen food processing plant in Abbotsford. There are 267 active cases in of today, which is 12 per cent fewer than on Saturday when 303 cases were active.

The seven teams on the outside looking in would be Buffalo and New Jersey - which both sat just 0.007 percentage points back of Montreal - Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose, Ottawa and Detroit. In the West, Chicago's chances sat at 2.6 per cent, while Arizona was at 16.6 per cent. From there, traditional best-of-seven series would follow through the Stanley Cup Final.

Toronto defenceman Tyson Barrie conceded last week any format would have flaws.

"I don't think there's going to be a ideal scenario where everyone's super excited about", Nashville's Ryan Johansen said earlier Thursday.

"It will certainly be weird without fans or whatever the scenario unfolds to be, but I think we all have to adapt". This would eliminate the need for travel and additional exposure to the coronavirus among players and team personnel.

Whatever it takes, Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine said Friday.

The Post has been told by several parties familiar with the call that a significant faction of players believe the format does not sufficiently reward clubs for their success before the National Hockey League season was put on pause. "It's not an issue for me".
