MLB’s financial plan gets chilly reception from players, reports say

MLB players respond to league's lengthy return plan

The early reports coming out of the exchange of proposals suggest that the player's union is very unhappy with what Major League Baseball is offering.

The union has remained adamant that players will not accept further decreases in pay, but deferring 2020 salary could help address cash-flow problems owners will have as a result of the postponed - and potentially shortened - season. On top of that, the owners are asking players to accept tiered pay cuts - the highest for the players making the most money, the lowest for those making the least dough.

As Passan says, it's only the first day of this new plan being in front of the union.

In March, the MLBPA agreed to play for a prorated portion of guaranteed salaries, which would amount to a almost 50 percent pay cut for a proposed 82-game season.

Joe Biden re-emerges for Memorial Day after two months in quarantine
The President visited Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia and then the historic Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Despite his lack of appearances in recent weeks, he has maintained a lead on Trump in national polls.

The MLBPA began disseminating the document to its 1,200 members shortly after receiving it, commissioning a Spanish version for its Latin American players, and consulted with its own set of medical experts.

A player due $35 million would instead make about $7.8 million.

The owners knew in March when they signed the agreement that there would likely NOT be any games this season with fans in the stands and they had already proposed several ideas about how that could be accomplished including games in Arizona or Arizona and Florida.

Teams are anxious about being at risk if a second wave of the virus causes cancellation of the post-season, which results in Major League Baseball receiving $787 million in broadcast revenue this year. For instance, increasing to 94 games would reduce the initial cut from 49.4% to 42%. One possibility would be to give them additional competitive balance-round picks in amateur drafts, where a pick in the 42-52 range overall yields prospects with slot values of $1.4 million to $1.8 million who have a better chance historically of becoming big leaguers.
