The Senate has confirmed Rep. John Ratcliffe, R-Texas, to serve as Director of National Intelligence, a role President Donald Trump has been working to install him in since last summer as part of an effort to reshape the intelligence community he often characterizes as working against him.

Schumer said he spoke with Ratcliffe over the phone and asked him to confirm the finding by intelligence agencies that Russian Federation tried interfering in the 2016 election but Ratcliffe declined. Want to bookmark your preferred posts and also tales to check out or reference later on?

Ratcliffe was confirmed by 49 to 44, with all "yes" votes coming from Trump's fellow Republicans and all "no" votes from Democrats.

Ratcliffe was first nominated to the post a year ago but he withdrew from consideration after fierce opposition from Democrats and skepticism from some Republicans.

Most Republicans have praised Ratcliffe since his second nomination.

The DNI serves as the head of the U.S. intelligence community.

But in a surprise announcement in February, Trump renominated Ratcliffe to the post, saying that he "would have completed process earlier, but John wanted to wait until after IG Report was finished".

Customers will have to be seated and each must be allowed four square meters (43 square feet) for social distancing. "We have demonstrated our capacity to process people in quarantine", Ms Berejiklian said.

"We need to assess what we've already done, take a look at what worked and what didn't work, and we'll discuss the way forward in the next couple of weeks", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters after President Donald Trump spoke to a Senate Republican luncheon.

Ratcliffe is a Republican member of the House of Representatives and was a vocal defender of Trump during the president's impeachment in 2019.

Ratcliffe joined Congress in 2015 and now sits on the House's judiciary and intelligence committees.

Senator Ron Wyden, a senior member of the Intelligence Committee, said Ratcliffe would be a threat to democracy. The director oversees 17 intelligence agencies, including the CIA, the National Security Agency, and the Department of the Treasury's Office of Intelligence and Analysis.

Trump has also shown himself as eager to have intelligence agencies investigate matters that he hopes will support his political positions, with agencies seeking to determine whether the coronavirus originated in a Chinese laboratory or through contact with infected animals.

With Ratcliffe now leaving his congressional seat after being renominated in the March Republican primary election, it will be up to precinct chairs in his district to place another candidate on the November ballot. The American turned out to be former Trump administration national security adviser Michael Flynn. Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation under oath.

"The next bill will need to have liability protections in there", McConnell said Thursday. "It puts things in a very different paradigm than what the intelligence community was meant to be and was supposed to be".
