Brazil records its highest Covid-19 death toll in single day

147;We are at war. Worse than defeat would be the shame of not putting up a fight,” Bolsonaro tweeted about the government decision to put forward the drugs

We know that Brazil has at least a quarter of a thousand people infected with the coronavirus, but the number of tests it has done is so small in relation to the size of its population that it is not even one per thousand people.

Almost 19,000 Brazilians have died so far from the pandemic, with 291,579 confirmed cases. That makes Brazil the country with the third-highest number of confirmed cases in the world.

According to figures from the Economy Ministry, since the pandemic erupted in Brazil a total of about eight million workers in the private sector have seen their workshifts and pay reduced.

Deaths continue to rise as well.

This new surge tops the previous record set Tuesday.

Interim Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello an active-duty army general authorized the modified protocol to promote the use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine

The death toll comes as Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has followed in the footsteps of USA president Donald Trump and defended the use of hydroxychloroquine, the unproven malaria drug Mr Trump claims to be using to keep Covid-19 at bay.

"The request for the arrest of the President's cell phone is inconceivable" and, if this were to happen, it would be "an affront to the highest authority" and "an inadmissible interference", which could even 'have unforeseeable consequences for national stability, '" he said.

The Czech Republic said the epidemic remains contained there, two weeks after shopping malls, cinemas and restaurant terraces reopened in an easing of lockdown measures. Meanwhile, fewer people are now following the city's stay-at-home order.

On Tuesday, Trump signaled that he's thinking about instituting a travel ban to and from Brazil. "Brazil has gone more or less "herd" [immunity, an attempt to maximize exposure to the virus], and they're having problems". The governor of Florida is doing very, very well testing - in particular Florida, because a big majority come into Florida. I worry about everything, I don't want people coming in here and infecting our people. The latter will happen even in spite of Bolsonaro's insistence that people must continue to go out to work and move the economy, simply because being sick people can not produce or consume at the pace at which the economy usually moves. Brazil has 271,628 confirmed cases, the third most in the world after Russian Federation and the US.

New coronavirus infections have begun to dip in much of the world, but the economic damage from the pandemic is only just beginning, and the disease is continuing its deadly march in Latin America and Russian Federation.
